*Italy, Paduan or Ferrarese (c. 1450-80), The Virgin and Child with four Angels and twelve Cherubs, bronze plaquette formed as a pax, the Virgin stands on a dais in front of a throne, its top with a shell niche and flanked by two columns with four angels standing guard and with twelve cherubs erecting swathes of garlands; the scene within decorative frame and with scrollwork at top 123 x 87mm (Molinier 381; Bange 568; Kress 303; Warren, Ashmolean, 382 and Wallace, p. 185, 46; Scaglia VI.2, c.1, this piece), very fine early or contemporary cast, brown patina, the back with S-shaped stand; old BADA label and Adams lot label affixed to back. Provenance: Sylvia Phyllis Adams collection, Bonham's, 23 May 1996, lot 132. Warren recorded the internal measurement of the Wallace collection example between the top of the Virgin's halo to the bottom of her left foot at 61.1mm whereas on the present piece the measurement is 63.8mm.
