*Germany, Peter Flötner (c.1490-1546), Double-faced Allegory of Prudence, bronze circular plaquette, Prudence with janiform head (bearded male head to left and female head to right) seated in a shell niche gazing into a mirror which is supported by a putto; in the background are trees and a town, 72mm (Weber 62.5; Bange 1705; Warren, Ashmolean, 451; Scaglia X.5), pierced and with tiny casting hole in the shell niche, very fine early cast. The stone model of this plaquette is in the V&A Museum, London, along with others from this same series. It is part of a set of plaquettes of Eight Seated Virtues: Faith, Hope, Charity, Patience, Prudence (as here), Fortitude, Temperance and Justice, dated by Weber to c. 1540-46.
