*Italy, Venetian (16th century), The Flagellation of Christ, large bronze plaquette, Christ bound to a pillar, scourged by his tormentors, 162 x 136mm (Scaglia IX.1; Molinier -; Bange -), brown patina, an extremely fine early cast, very rare. Francesco Rossi in the Scaglia catalogue mentions that the right-hand tormentor and parts of the Christ figure are influenced by Francesco da Santacroce's painting of The Flagellation of Christ 0f 1516, in the Accademia, Venice. He postulated that the plaquettes could have been made as tabernacle doors.
