Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge, The Montagu Collection of Coins – British, Anglo-Saxon and English series, 1st – 3rd portions, London, 1895-6, hand priced with buyer's names throughout as well as additional annotation including notes of the prices realized of many of the provenanced coins, bound together as one volume, three-quarter calf, gilt title on spine; and the Montagu sale, 5th portion, 1897 (British Coins and Medals), bound in red cloth [both with ex libris bookplates of E. Burstal] (2) The 3rd portion included the unique Juxon medal (pattern five-broad piece) of Charles I at £770 and a note presumed to be E.K. Burstal's hand reads: "Now in the British Museum said to have cost £700. The highest price for which a coin has ever been sold at auction. Put up at £100 by Snowden ran rapidly up to £350 when Mr. Whelan (Rollin & Feuardent) and Spink remained in & carried it up by £5 and £10 bids. It is said that Messrs. Spink bought this coin "to stock" giving so large a price out of trade rivalry with Mr. Whelan who has the commissions of the British Museum." The lot also includes a light-hearted letter dated 12 May 1965 from Albert Baldwin to Dr. E. Burstal regarding a copy of the Juxon medal.
