Kiangnan. Kuang-hsü Dollar ND (1897) AU Details (Scratch) PCGS, Nanking mint, KM-Y145, L&M-210B, Kann-66, Chang-CH64, WS-0788, Wenchao-639 (rarity 2 stars). Reeded edge. Variety with single stroke in sheng ("province"). The iconic first modern silver Dollar issued by the mint at Nanking, and an issue that is virtually impossible to locate in meaningful, problem-free condition. Though both Wenchao and Wang Chun Lin assign a somewhat similar rarity and value to both the Herringbone and Reeded edge varieties of this type, Lin and Ma assign the latter a far greater value, with its rarity supported by a quick survey of the certified population--compared to the roughly 126 examples of the Herringbone edge subtype presently graded, both grading services combined have only seen around 34 Reeded edge specimens. Indeed, this is the first such example we have presented. Though admittedly lightly scratched through the top Manchu character on the obverse (reverse as holdered) and lightly cleaned in the distant past, the execution of the offering presents noticeably clear details, a striking feature, considering that most survivors show considerable weakness towards the center of the obverse and over the dragon's scales. Furthermore stemming from an esteemed collection, and a type that is virtually unattainable in Mint State condition.
