China
Sinkiang. Hsüan-t'ung Sar (Tael) ND (1910) VF30 PCGS, Tihwa mint, KM-Y7.2 (1905), L&M-814, Kann-1011, WS-1300, Wenchao-340 (rarity 3 stars), Chang Foundation-104, Xinjiang Numismatics-Unl., Hsien-Chang-214. "Flying dragon" type, with uncircled dragon surrounded by Chahtai (Turki) characters. A very scarce type in all levels of preservation, this inaugural date for the issue is notoriously plagued by both the technological shortcomings of the Shuimogou Machinery Bureau as well as the rampant circulation so many examples encountered owing to a short production run and the needs of the soldiers it was meant to pay. Produced just prior to the outbreak of revolution in 1911, most survivors have picked up numerous post-mint issues and damage in coming down to the present day. As such, a straight-graded, honest VF example such as the present piece is a welcome opportunity for collectors. Though distributed most clearly over the highpoints, visible wear has kept from blending the integral details of the design together, resulting in an on-the-whole laudable representative.
