ANCIENT COINS. Greek. Attica, Athens (c.449-415 BC), Silver Tetradrachm, head of Athena right, wearing crested Attic helmet decorated with three olive-leaves and a palmette, and wearing an earring and a necklace, rev AΘE, owl standing right, its head facing, an olive-sprig and crescent behind, all within and incuse square, 17.25g, 8h (Svoronos, pl. 12, 15; Starr, pl. XXII, 4'). A wholly exceptional Tetradrachm of Athens of very fine style, well-struck from fresh dies on a broad flan of excellent metal, the types well-centred and the owl in particular is remarkably attractive, the incuse square perfectly enveloped within the surrounding flan, beautifully toned, good extremely fine and incredibly difficult to find in anything approaching this high state of preservation, an outstanding example.
