Great Britain
James I gold Laurel ND (1620-1621) MS61 NGC, Tower mint, Rose mm, Third Coinage, KM74, S-2638A, N-2113, Schneider-84 var. (punctuation). 9.02gm. (rose) IACOBVS D: G: MAG: BRI: FRA: ET HIB: REX •, third laureate bust of James I left, XX (denomination) behind / FACIAM | EOS IN | GENTEM | VNVM (rose), crowned royal shield with long cross dividing the flan into four quadrants. Likely the most appealing bust type for James I's Laurel coinage, benefitting enormously from its fully Mint State preservation. Uniquely struck from what appears to be a mildly corroded obverse die, creating a subtle "rippled" texture to the surfaces, presenting an eye-catching backdrop to the devices and creating a virtually matte-like finish. Though mild striking weakness can be detected in localized areas of the legends, this does nothing to impinge on their legibility, and we would note that the obverse mintmark in particular is unusually crisp for the type.
