France
Carolingian. Charlemagne (768-814) Denier ND (771-793) Good XF (Flan Crack), Melle mint, Class 2, MEC I-727, MG-268, Dep-605, Nou-44, Kluge-139. 17mm. 1.15gm. CARo | LVS (AR ligate) / MEDOLVS with crook-shaped L around lozenge-like cross. A classic pre-reform issue of Charlemagne from this incredibly important Carolingian mint, sometimes suggested by scholars as the only new silver mine of the Carolingian era. Though a hairline crack appears on the flan, the issue is otherwise quite well-struck, particularly given that the type is almost never available above the AU level.
