Philippe VI (1328-1350) gold Parisis d'Or ND (from 1329) MS63 NGC, Paris mint, Fr-264, Ciani-268, Lafaurie-252, Dup-248. 6.99gm. Emission from 6 September 1329. +PhILIPPVS: DЄI: GRA: FRAИCORVM: REX (triple annulet stops, the last of which contains a star between two annulets), Philippe, crowned, seated facing on Gothic throne, scepter surmounted by Hand of Justice in left hand, lis-tipped scepter in right; a lion crouching beside each foot / +XPC: VInCIT: XPC: RЄGИAT: XPC: ImPЄRAT (triple pellet stops, bars of contraction over each PC), cross fleurée with lis in angles; all within double quatrefoil, with trefoil at each spandrel. In a word: spectacular. Among the earliest gold emissions produced during Philippe VI's reign, the Parisis d'Or undoubtedly ranks as one of the most beautiful French hammered gold types, especially when it is located in this pristine of a state. Presently situated alongside just 3 other examples in this peak certification at NGC, it is indeed hard to imagine a specimen coming meaningfully finer. Essentially immaculate in its overall quality, not a detail of the design is left to the imagination, all of these canvassed against a satin golden surface. Likely of even greater quality than the Gallia specimen, we have offered only a single MS62 previously as part of the Briand Collection, with the last in this grade bringing 32,000 CHF in 2016. Very easily a testament to the immense heights of French medieval gold, and a coin even the most scrupulous of the collectors will blush at. Sold with old dealer tag.
