Philippe VI (1328-1350) gold Double d'Or ND (from 1340) MS62 NGC, Paris mint, Fr-267, Ciani-273, Lafaurie-256, Dup-253. 6.75gm. 1st Emission (from 6 April 1340). • Ph': DEI: GRA • | • FRAn'C : RЄX • (annulet and triple annulet stops), Philippe VI, crowned, seated facing beneath Gothic dais, lis-tipped scepter in left hand, cross-tipped scepter in right / +:XP'C: VIИCIT: XP'C: RЄGИAT: XP'C: IMPЄRAT (double pellet within annulet stops), cross fleurée over voided short cross potent, with voided quatrefoil at center and crowns in angles; all within double quatrefoil, with trefoils in spandrels. Incredibly lustrous and undeniably well-preserved, this issue stands very near the peak of the certified population, with NGC only recording having seen a single MS64 finer to date. Despite a clear die shift that is visible in the margins, the central devices have not suffered any loss of detail because of this feature. At present, this is only the fourth example of the type we have ever offered, and is far above the quality one could usually expect for the issue.
