SICILY. Katane. AR Tetradrachm (17.15 gms), Obverse die signed by Herakleidas, ca. 412-405 B.C. NGC Ch VF, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 2/5. Fine Style. Edge Cut.
HGC-2, 573; SNG ANS-1259 (same obv. die); SNG Cop-179 (same dies). Obverse: Charioteer, holding kentron and reins, driving quadriga left; above, crowning Nike flying right; [H in exergue]; Reverse: Head of Amenanos left, wearing tainia; [crayfish to right]. Quite attractively toned, this RARE signed type features a particularly alluring reverse with an engaging portrait of the youthful river god, albeit a bit off-center and with an edge cut. Nevertheless, the tremendous pedigree offered increases its already robust desirability that much more.
