SICILY. Leontini. AR Tetradrachm (17.22 gms), ca. 476-466 B.C. NGC AU, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 5/5.
HGC-2, 661; Boehringer-10 (this coin); SNG ANS-205 (same rev. die). Obverse: Charioteer, holding kentron and reins, driving quadriga right; above, crowning Nike flying right; Reverse: Head of roaring lion right; four barley grains around. Struck on a somewhat compact flan, this elegant specimen employs a deep cabinet tone and tremendous originality. Though emanating from the Ars Classica sale that did feature a portion of the collection of Sir Arthur J. Evans, this portion was limited to his Roman material, and the pedigree to his collection on the holder does not appear to be accurate.
From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection.
Ex: Ars Classica XVII (10/1934) Lot # 161.
Ex: Salton-Schlessinger XXII (2/1955) Lot # 3.
Estimate: $1500 - $3000
