SICILY. Messana. AR Tetradrachm (17.21 gms), ca. 420-413 B.C. NGC Ch EF, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 3/5.
HGC-2, 792; Caltabiano-526 (D208/R223); BMC-39 (same dies). Charioteer, holding kentron and reins, driving biga of mules right; in exergue, two inward-facing dolphins; Reverse: Hare springing right; below, dolphin right. Well centered and attractively toned, this example offers steely gray surfaces, a good seal of shimmering brilliance, and very little in the way of actual handling. A few light flan flaws are noted, but not in any way distracting.
