SICILY. Syracuse. Dionysios I, 406-367 B.C. AV 100 Litrai (Double Dekadrachm) (5.78 gms), ca. 400-370 B.C. NGC Ch AU, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 4/5. Fine Style.
HGC-2, 1275; Berend-13 (D10/R8); SNG ANS-326 (same dies). Obverse: Head of Arethousa left, with hair in sakkos decorated with a stellate pattern; pellet to lower right; Reverse: Herakles kneeling right, strangling the Nemean Lion; rocks below. Though the reverse is struck ever so slightly off-center, all of the design elements are still on the flan, and this example overall presents great relief and rather elegant artistry.

From the Mark and Lottie Salton Collection.

Ex: Ars Classica XVII (10/1934) Lot # 230.

Estimate: $10000 - $20000
