MACEDON. Thraco-Macedonian. Letaioi. AR Stater (9.62 gms), ca. 480 B.C. NGC EF★, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 4/5.
HGC-3.1, Unlisted; SNG ANS-Unlisted; Traite-I, 1583 (as "Lete"); Jameson-1951 = H. Weber-1821 (this coin). Obverse: Centaur right, carrying off protesting nymph; retrograde ΛETA[ION] to upper left; Reverse: Crested Corinthian helmet right within incuse square. Of IMMENSE RARITY, this archaic tribal issue is one of just a small handful known that mentions the issuing tribe. Given the placement of the ethnic, some examples, such as those from the Orreskioi and the Zaelioi, can be confused for this type, as the ethnic is the clear point of divergence, and it is oftentimes off the flan. Here, the tribe is clearly rendered, and the dramatic obverse scene presents an engaging archaic nature. Most attractively toned and struck, with a wholesome overall appearance and undoubtedly destined for yet another prominent cabinet.
