ATTICA. Athens. AR Tetradrachm (16.93 gms), ca. 5th-4th Centuries B.C. NGC AU, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 4/5.
cf. HGC-4, 1597 (for prototype); cf. Kroll-8 (same). Near East or Egyptian contemporary imitation. Obverse: Helmeted head of Athena right; Reverse: Owl standing right, head facing; olive sprig and crescent to left; all within incuse square. For an imitation piece, this example is exceptionally well struck and attractive. Based on the popular "Athenian Owl," this piece stands out as a beautiful work of mimicry.
