Folio [40 by 26.5 cm], first three volumes bound in contemporary full brown mottled calf, spines with seven raised bands, lettered and richly decorated in gilt, gilt-decorated board edges, marbled endpapers, with all pages edges red; final [double] volume in contemporary full brown mottled calf, spine with five raised bands, richly decorated in gilt, two spine labels lettered in gilt, with all pages edges marbled. Finely engraved title by Jan Goeree and exceptional engraved portrait plate of the author by F. van Mieris in the first volume; (32), 559, (1) + (4), 541, (1) + (4) 454 + (4), 467, (1) + (4), 444 pages; all half-titles present; printed titles in red and black throughout with finely engraved vignettes; finely engraved dedication vignette; finely engraved headpieces, tailpieces and initials; profusely illustrated with fine engravings of medals throughout the text. Joints exhibit some cracking, particularly the first volume, though bindings remain sound; final volume with some spung signatures. Institutional bookplate to rear pastedown of first volume; old hand-numbered labels at top of each spine. Pages generally clean and bright. Overall, a very good set. The preferred French edition of this magnificent classic work, first published a few years earlier in Dutch (see previous). Indispensable and still the standard reference on historical medals issued from 1556 to 1716. It remains a key source of information on European medals issued during this period relating to America.
