First Edition Sutter Biography
Dana, Julian. SUTTER OF CALIFORNIA. New York: Press of the Pioneers, 1934. First edition. 8vo, original red cloth, gilt; jacket. Frontispiece portrait; (iii)–xi, (1), 423, (5) pages; 13 additional plates. Near fine in a very good, price-clipped dust-jacket. A popular biography of the famous settler John Augustus Sutter (1803–1880), the German-Swiss colonizer who landed in California in 1839 and began to plan a fortified settlement in the area of what is now Sacramento. Gold was discovered in January 1848 at Sutter's Mill by his employee James W. Marshall, forever tying Sutter's name to the Gold Rush that quickly ensued. Scarce in the original jacket.
