Slafter on Vermont Coppers
Slafter, Rev. Edmund. THE VERMONT COINAGE. Montpelier: Vermont Historical Society, 1870. First edition. In Collections of the Vermont Historical Society, Volume I (1870), pages 291–318; 2 lithographic plates. Complete volume offered, with accompanying Volume II (1871). Both volumes 8vo, original matching brown embossed cloth, gilt. Volume I: xix, (1), 508 pages; 2 lithographic plates. Volume II: frontispiece portrait of Ira Allen; xxviii, 530, (4) pages. Both volumes worn, with three of the four boards detached. Slafter article is essentially fine. Good to very good, overall. The Rev. Edmund Slafter's seminal work on the early coins of Vermont was the first specialized monograph on such a topic: while others had written short articles and general surveys of colonial coins, Slafter attempted a focused, serious look at one particular series. It was first published here in the Collections of the Vermont Historical Society (1870), a scarce volume offered only infrequently. The article was also published as an offprint, bound separately and limited to 50 copies, which is extremely rare today. These two volumes are all that was published of this particular Vermont Historical Society publication. Ex William A. Burd Library; previously owned by Stack's, and including their invoice for when they purchased them from the VHS in 1946 for $8.20.
