NGC MS63+ | George IV (1820-1830), Chantrey's Halfcrown, 1825, Type 3, edge milled, 14.10g, 7h (Davies 191; Bull 2371; ESC 642; Spink 3809), scattered bagmarks and a few rim nicks at 12 and 2 o'clock, otherwise a beautifully lustrous and pleasingly 'honest' example, even for this common specie, a pleasingly bold extremely fine, in NGC holder, graded MS63+ (Cert. #6295510-010).
Close examination of the 5 in the date reveals a 'halo' of disturbance indicative of die manipulation and most probably the obliteration of an earlier punched integer. It is tantalising to think, given the extreme rarity of the 1824 issue that this obverse die provides the closest link many collectors may ever get to be within touching distance of that elusive rarity.
Estimate: £500 - £800
