PTOLEMAIC KINGS OF EGYPT. Ptolemy V Epiphanes, 205-180 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 13.98 g, 12 h), Soloi in Cilicia, c. 204-200 BC. Jugate busts to right of Serapis, laureate, bearded and draped, and Isis, crowned, diademed and draped. Rev. ΠTOΛEMAIOY BAΣIΛEΩΣ Eagle with closed wings standing on thunderbolt to left, his head turned back to right, with cornucopia at his shoulder. Landvatter -. Svoronos -. Apparently unique and unpublished. Some slight roughness, otherwise, extremely fine.

This coin has portraits of fine style but since it lacks any monograms or symbols or added letters on the reverse, it would be tempting to attribute it to the imperial mint of Alexandria. However, since it shares the same obverse die as the tetradrachm in the following lot, 256, which can be attributed to Soloi thanks to a shared monogram (see below, lot 258), we can not only confidently attribute it to Soloi, but can place it at the start of that mint's activity.
