SICILY. Syracuse. Circa 420-415 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 29.5 mm, 16.94 g, 12 h). Male driver, wearing a long chiton and holding the reins in both hands and a goad in his right, standing right in a chariot car, drawn by two horses to right; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses; in exergue, grasshopper to right. Rev. ΣΥΡΑΚΟΣΙ - ΟΝ Head of Arethusa to right, wearing her hair in a krobylos bound at the back and a diadem ornamented with a meander pattern, a double spiral earring and a plain necklace; around, four dolphins swimming to the left. Boehringer 726. Jameson 782 (same dies). SNG ANS 246 (same dies). Very rare. Of particularly fine Classical style with a severe and serene head of Arethusa. Obverse struck from a rusty die and with minor die faults and marks on the reverse, otherwise, good very fine.
