EGYPT. Alexandria. Antoninus Pius, 138-161. Drachm (Bronze, 34.00 mm, 26.75 g, 11 h), commemorating the victories in southern Scotland under Quintus Lollius Urbicus, governor of Britain, 139-142/3, year Z = 7 = 143-144. [ΑYΤ Κ Τ ΑΙ]Λ ΑΔΡ - ΑΝΤωΝΙΝΟC EY-CEΒ Laureate head of Antoninus Pius to right. Rev. L Z Nike, holding wreath in her right hand and palm branch in her left, advancing left towards trophy between two bound and seated captives. Dattari (Savio) 2707. Geissen 1448. K&G 35.225. RPC IV.4 Online temp. 15868.9 (this coin). Dark brown patina with hints of green. With a good portrait and a detailed reverse. Very fine.

What is well-known about the reign of Antoninus Pius was that it was a remarkably peaceful one. One of the few wars, albeit a fairly minor one, took place along Roman Britain's northern frontier, where, in 139 Lollius Urbicus began preparations for an invasion of Scotland by repairing the fort at Coria/Corbridge in Northumberland. He then moved north, ultimately constructing what is known as the Antonine Wall, between the Firth's of Forth and Clyde, begun in 142. There can be no doubt that this reverse, struck in far-away Alexandria, refers to just this campaign. In the end, however, the wall was abandoned c. 162.
