Plotina and Matidia, Augustae, 105-123 and 112-119. Aureus (Gold, 20 mm, 7.41 g, 7 h), Rome, 117-118. PLOTIN-AE AVG Draped bust of Plotina to right, wearing a double stephane made of precious metal, and with her hair tied into a plait that falls down the back of her neck. Rev. MATIDI-AE AVG Draped bust of Matidia to right, wearing an elaborate stephane made of precious metal and with her hair bound up into a decorative bun at the back. BMC (Hadrian) 53 and pl. 47, 15 (same dies). Calicó 1150. Cohen 1. RIC Hadrian 34 = RIC II, 2450. Extremely rare, one of the finest of all the known specimens. With both refined and realistic portraits of the late emperor Trajan's wife, Plotina, and niece, Matidia, who was, in addition, Hadrian's mother-in-law. Beautifully struck in high relief. Extremely fine.
