IVLIA – AVGVSTA Draped bust of Julia Domna to right, her hair arranged in six waves and with a bun at the back. Biaggi 1122 (same dies). BMC 192 note. Calicó 2588 (this coin). Cohen -. RIC 161a. Very rare. Nicely toned and with splendid portraits of fine style. Virtually as struck.

Sold on behalf of a Swiss bank, ex Numismatica Ars Classica 52, 7 October 2009, 507, and Numismatic Fine Arts XXVI, 14 August 1991, 277, and from the collection of V. M. Brand, Part 3, Sotheby's Zurich 9 June 1983, 368 (there purchased by Ariadne Galleries in New York City), originally acquired from Spink in London in 1910 and from the Cologne Getrudenstrasse Hoard of 1909.

While all the "Dynastic" issues of Septimius Severus and his family are rare, those that pair Julia Domna with her husband when he has a bust with bare shoulders are much rarer than those that portray Septimius wearing an aegis.
