BYZANTINE SEALS. John Barbantinos, sebastos, Circa 12th-13th century. Seal or Bulla (Lead, 31 mm, 16.58 g, 12 h). O /Γ/I/O/S - Θ/E/O/Δ/Ω/P Nimbate and bearded bust of St. Theodore facing, holding a spear over his right shoulder with his right hand and holding a shield with his left. Rev. + IΩ / CEBACTÒC / BΑPBAN/THNÒC in four lines within a plain dotted border. Apparently unpublished. A rare seal. The Barbantenoi family is not documented in sigillography. Their name implies a western origin: there is an area known as Barbantes in Galicia, northern Spain, and it would be interesting if there were a connection. Very fine.
From the collection of a scholar.
