Dirham (Bronze, 30 mm, 14.56 g, 7 h), giving the Abbasid caliph al-Nasir as overlord, unlisted mint, possibly Mardin, AH 589 = AD 1193. Three fully draped, figures, probably female, two of whom raise their hands in mourning, one standing facing and the second turned to left, with another, on the right, standing fully facing with her left arm lowered, to left, right and behind a draped and veiled woman seated to left, holding her head in her hands. Rev. Name and titles of Abbasid caliph al-Nasir in three lines; in the outer margin, name and titles of Husam al-Din Yuluq Arslan and date. Album 1829.3. S&S Type 35.1. Whelan Type III, 54-6. Undoubtedly one of the finest known examples of this extraordinary type, sharply struck from fresh dies and beautifully centered. Extremely fine.
