British rule of Ireland ended in 1926 with the establishment of the Irish Free State. Desiring a unique set of Irish designs, a selection committee was formed and headed by poet W.B. Yeats. So as to avoid controversial religious or political themes, the group selected agricultlural / animal motifs.
