URUGUAY: Republic, AR peso fuerte, 1844, KM-5, Peso del Sitio issued during the Siege of Montevideo, PCGS graded MS61. The Great Siege of Montevideo or Sitio Grande, was the siege suffered by the city of Montevideo between 1843 and 1851 during the Uruguayan Civil War. The "Peso del Sitio" was the first and only silver coin minted in Uruguay. As the city was under siege, the silver was provided by citizens and this is the reason for the low mintage.
