GERMANY: LOT of 3 naval tokens, including German Empire: SMS Grosser Kurfürst (1913), round token in zinc worth 10 (pfennig); SMS Bayern (1915), diamond-shaped token in iron for soap (Seifenmarke); Weimar Republic/Third Reich: Karlsruhe (1927), octagonal canteen token in brass worth 10 (pfennig); average grades; retail value $200, lot of 3 pieces. Launched in 1913, SMS Grosser Kurfürst saw action at the Battle of Jutland and was hit several times. She later participated in Operation Albion along with SMS Bayern. Both ships were interned at Scapa Flow in the Orkneys following the signing of the Armistice in November 1918. There, the crew waited 6 months for the outcome of the Treaty of Versailles and secretly made preparations to scuttle the ships in the event that they were to be surrendered to the Allies. The order came on June 18, 1919, and three days later, two hours before the Treaty was signed, almost the entire German fleet was scuttled and sank. The light cruiser (Kreuzer) Karlsruhe took part in Operation Weserübung in 1940 and landed troops in Kristiansand in southern Norway. On its return voyage, she was struck by a British torpedo and suffered severe damage, and was scuttled by an escorting German U-boat.

Estimate: 100-150 USD
