Caracalla, 198-217. Antoninianus (Silver, 23 mm, 5.39 g, 1 h), Rome, 217. ANTONINVS PIVS AVG GERM Radiate, draped and cuirassed bust of Caracalla to right, seen from behind. Rev. P M TR P XX COS IIII P P Serapis seated left on throne, wearing polos on his head, holding grain ears (?) in his right hand and long scepter in his left. BMC -. Cohen 386. RIC 291c. Very rare. Spot of corrosion on the obverse, otherwise, good extremely fine.

From the collection of Dipl.-Ing. Adrian Lang, privately acquired from W. Tillack and previously purchased from D. Morgan.

A curious detail about this coin is the object held in Serapis' hand, which differs notably from the usual grain ears. Perhaps the artist initially engraved a patera, and only reengraved it into somewhat awkwardly looking grain ears after noticing his mistake.
