The Danishmendids were a turkoman local dynasty whose origins are obscure and steeped in legendary flavour. They established a rule in central and Eastern Anatolia centred originally around Sivas, Tokat, and Niksar, following the demise of Byzantine power in Asia Minor after the disastrous defeat in the Battle of Manzikert in 1071.
