Japan Greater Japan Imperial National Bank, Tokyo 5 Yen ND (1878) Pick 21 PMG Very Fine 25. Beginning in 1877, the National Bank began issuing unconvertible banknotes in denominations of 1 and 5 Yen. This higher denomination note is scarce in any and all grades, irrespective of city of issue. Previous mounting and staining is mentioned for accuracy on this otherwise handsome example. Blacksmiths are portrayed at front, and the Japanese god of commerce and shipping, Ebisu, is engraved at back.
