Hsüan-t'ung silver Pattern Dollar ND (1910) AU55 NGC, Tientsin mint, Kann-219, L&M-24, Chang-CH25, WS-0036, Wenchao-98 (rarity 2 stars), Chang Foundation-32. By Luigi Giorgi. One of the final Patterns of the Qing Dynasty, situated alongside the Long- and Short-Whiskered Dragon Dollars as some of the most famous design concepts for the ubiquitously well-known 1911 Dollar (cf. L&M-37). One of four denominations conceived by the Central Mint in this year as part of Hsüan-t'ung's brief (and ultimately failed) effort to unify the Imperial currency, it was only the 1/2 Dollar that was actually released for circulation. Regardless, however, it is the Dollar that truly allows the beauty of Giorgi's design to show through in its full glory. The Imperial Dragon appears tightly coiled and nearly ready to leap from the flan, framed all around by mottled caramel and russet tone. Though not the highest grade conceivable for the type, the offering displays little beyond honest wear, its surfaces free from cleaning or other post-mint damage. From the Rulin Wei Collection
