Kwangsi. Republic Cent (Fen) Year 28 (1939) MS64 Brown PCGS, Kweilin mint, KM347.1 (Rare), CCC-734, CL-KH.05, Duan-2739, Hsu (Copper)-588, HNS-1340, Shanghai Museum-1402. Variety with small Kwei below spade. By all indications an exceptionally rare emission from Kwangsi's short-lived copper series, assigned the second highest catalog value of the just five entries under the province in Zhou and Li's Concise Catalogue of Modern Chinese Copper Coins in peak preservation. Indeed, the coin on offer here presently ranks entirely unsurpassed in the PCGS census, just one other in this grade having come to auction in the last decade according to our research, along with the Norman Jacobs example (Baldwin's-Ma Tak Wo Auction 44, August 2008, Lot 646). Both sides of the piece appear replete with die polish, a cobalt blue to the centers pairing nicely with the cupric red accents that silhouette the raised features. Entirely missing from the Q. David Bowers Collection, and a coin likely to fill a hole in even advanced Chinese copper collections.
