China
Yunnan. T'ang Chi-yao gold 10 Dollars ND (1919) MS63 PCGS, Kunming mint, KM-Y482, L&M-1057, Kann-1524, Shih-A7-1, WS-0652. Variety with "1" below the tassels on flags. An incredible state of preservation for what is well-known to typically be a poorly preserved coin, and an issue that proves relatively challenging in general. Kann notes that these emissions were produced following the sky-rocketing of the value of silver in 1919, though the large numbers that were minted--which he estimates at around 900,000 10 Dollar-coins--coupled with the receding value of silver in subsequent years, led to many such pieces being melted down to reclaim their gold content. Embossed by a careful strike on a highly lustrous planchet, we would note that, to date, the highest grade yet awarded by either major grading service is an MS64, a level achieved by a mere 6 coins out of the 162 yet certified.
