China
Republic Yuan Shih-kai Dollar Year 3 (1914) MS66 PCGS, KM-Y329, L&M-63, Kann-645, WS-0174-8. Yuan connected (Triangle Yuan) variety, with recut stars on epaulette. Visually and conditionally stunning quality for this mainstay of Chinese numismatics, well-recognized by experienced and novice collectors alike from thousands of lower and average-grade examples, and yet only very seldom-encountered so fine. Across the whole of the many subvarieties known for the type, PCGS records that they have certified a mere 30 examples a grade point or more finer (the top graded yet awarded being an MS68), with none for this specific variety surpassing the present piece. Indeed, we have only ever offered one conditionally similar example of this date, an MS66+, which achieved $48,000 in our July 2020 HKINF sale. Clearly a coin that long survived at the end of a coin roll, the offering juxtaposes satin, icy white obverse surfaces that just hint at peripheral iridescence with a dark, nacreous reverse tone. Visually unique, and sure to come hotly contested. From the Glorium Collection
