Republic Tuan Chi-jui Dollar ND (1924) MS64 PCGS, Tientsin mint, L&M-865, Kann-683, Chang-CH243, WS-0107, Wenchao-886 (rarity 2 stars), Shanghai Museum-691, Shi Jiagan Collection-Unl. Wholly impressive for the type and showcasing appearances more akin to a medallic or Specimen striking, produced in commemoration of Tuan Chi-jui's taking office as the provisional Chief Executive of the Republic of China at the outset of the "Peaceful Unification" and the abolition of the presidency. While not conditionally the finest we've handled, the sheer aesthetics of the piece at hand propels it to an elite tier, each meticulous detail fully embossed upon a luminous, mirrored planchet, every feature rising in clean contrast against its surrounding elements and projected towards the viewer in surprising relief. Only the reverse displays a suggestion of honeyed tone while the obverse is undeniably icy, highlighting surfaces devoid of any singularly significant instances of handling and revealing only light wisps that cap the assigned grade. A single-year type that finds itself exceedingly sought-after, struck by supporters of this controversial figure during an increasingly tumultuous time in Chinese history, and clearly a trophy of the entire Republican Dollar series.
