Republic Sun Yat-sen silver Specimen American Pattern "Junk" Dollar Year 18 (1929) SP58 PCGS, Hangchow mint, KM-Pn100, L&M-95, Kann-616, Shih-D3-13, Chang-CH197 (Rare), WS-0139, Wenchao-910 (rarity 2 stars), Shi Jiagan Collection-602. Struck from Philadelphia mint-made dies. A highly historical Pattern, produced not long after the outbreak of civil war between the Kuomintang-led government of the Republic of China and the forces of the Chinese Communist Party, and heralding one of the most famous coins of the whole Republic--the so-called "Junk" Dollar of Sun Yat-sen. One of a series of numerous trials commissioned from mints in the United States, Austria, Italy, Great Britain, and Japan, Wang Chun Li records that dies from all of these designs were submitted to authorities at the Hangchow mint, where a number of pieces were struck from each pair of dies. Though the final design would ultimately be amended--particularly in the features of the Junk--it was the Italian design of A. Motti that carried the day. Just the fourth example we have handled, this piece carries fully mirrorlike features, with ample die polish contained behind a smattering of scattered surface hairlines.
