Republic Yuan Shih-kai gold 10 Dollars Year 8 (1919) MS63 PCGS, Tientsin mint, KM-Y330, L&M-1030, Kann-1531, Shih-A4-2, Hsu-16, WS-0059, Wenchao-36 (rarity 3 stars), Shanghai Museum-14, Shi Jiagan Collection-4. Fabled as one of China's few proposed gold coins of the modern era, the piece at hand represents part of Finance Minister Tsao Yu-lin's attempt to revive a gold standard in the nation. Unfortunately, however, the project ultimately failed, leading to the already small allotment of 10 and 20 Dollar-coins vanishing from circulation, with even those that survived oftentimes showing ample evidence of being poorly kept. Such hardly seems to have been the case for the selection seen here, which still carries all the trademarks of having been freshly produced from new dies--the surfaces appear noticeably Prooflike and are filled with fine die polish, wear altogether absent, and any marks that do exist more likely being the result of exceedingly minor cabinet friction than any serious mishandling. We would note that this coin ranks among the finest examples of the type we have ever handled, and that the specimen in the Norman Jacobs Collection only certified as an AU58. Undoubtedly worthy of the closest bidder consideration, and a premium bid. From the Tony Ma Collection
