Republic Yuan Shih-kai Fantasy "Big Beard" Dollar ND (1912) UNC Details (Cleaned) NGC, KM-X Unl., Kann-Unl. (cf. Kann-672 for type), WS-Unl., Wenchao-Unl., SHI-Unl. Reeded edge. A fascinating fantasy or imitative striking of this famed Chinese rarity minted at Suzhou, long misascribed to Kiangsu Military Governor Chin Teh-chuen, and recognized in more modern times as an issue depicting Yuan Shih-kai. Strikingly absent from the standard literature on fantasy types, we would note that the Irving Goodman Collection contained two very similar pieces, stated simply as being of "uncertain origin" (Superior June 1991, Lots 1031-1032); one of these two lots later appeared in Champion's October 2009 Auction as lot 273. Rather well-produced and struck despite extensive surface cleaning, and sure to come hotly demanded by enthusiasts of the series.
