People's Republic brass Proof Pattern Panda "Great Wall" 100 Yuan 1982 PR69 Ultra Cameo NGC, KM-Unl., Cheng-Unl., CC-Unl., PAN-pg. 7. 32mm. 12gm. By Chen Jian. A practically unparalleled rarity of modern Chinese numismatics frequently found missing from even the most advanced collections. Produced as part of the same program to establish a new bullion coinage as the other, similarly dated Pattern in this sale, this type features the same iconic Panda obverse with the denomination placed to the right, though with a view of the Great Wall on the reverse, rather than the adopted Temple of Heaven. While the reverse design failed to stick for the Panda series, it found widespread adoption of later commemoratives, including the "Empress of China" silver 5 Yuan of 1986 (cf. KM152), and, perhaps most famously, the Dragon and Phoenix issues introduced in 1990. To date, we have been able to locate just a single other representative in sales archives, which ranked as a mere PR65 Ultra Cameo by comparison. Though NGC's census does not show population information for this coin, it quite likely represents one of, if not the, finest to have ever come to auction, as well as one of the only made available to collectors in the 40 years since it was first produced.
