(g) Elizabeth II (1952-), Proof Two-Pounds, 1994, Double-Sovereign Error Mule, Commemorating "300 Years of the Bank of England", third head right, by R Maklouf, rev. Corporate Seal of the Bank of England featuring Seated Britannia, crowned monogram of William and Mary above, Bank of England in hand-written font below, edge milled, 15.98g, 12h (Spink K4A [4314A]), brilliant uncirculated, very rare, with Royal Mint Case of Issue and Certificate of Authenticity no. 0091.
It is not known precisely how many of these intended 1,000 gold Proofs were issued before the Royal Mint noticed the error and requested original purchasers return the coins for a correctly-struck replacement in July 1994. However general thought is that no more than 400 pieces entered circulation, this evidently being one of the first pieces to do so before the mistake was realised. Since the landmark sale of an uncertified example in our industry-defining 'UK Lockdown Day One' auction on 24 March 2020 (lot 506 - £2,728 ~ $3,130), approximately a dozen more examples have surfaced. Nevertheless the well-noted variety remains a prized rarity and highly sought after thus
