, ,
, This specimen set of coins depicting King George VI was for a decade in the possession of Her Royal Highness Princess Elizabeth of York, the future Queen Elizabeth II between the year of her father's Coronation and the year after her marriage to her 'strength and stay', His Late Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. It would be gifted to her by Governor Montagu Norman, during an 'informal visit to the Bank of England' on Monday 29 November 1937. The then Princess Elizabeth, had recently become heir presumptive to the British throne following the unexpected coronation of her father, King George VI on 12 May 1937. The previous year had been especially turbulent for the Royal family, not only would it endure the unhappy loss of a much loved 'Grandpa England' and founder of the House of Windsor, King George V, but then suffer the public scandal of the Abdication crisis that saw Edward VIII sacrifice his destined Royal duty in favour of marriage to American socialite and divorcee Wallis Simpson.
, , The dedication to public duty and service for which Her Majesty the Queen is rightly lauded as having performed throughout her life, would become instilled in her from an early age. Her Majesty's devotion to her people has been witnessed not just in peacetime but also in war. Her selfless duty as a member of the Auxiliary Territorial Service during the Second World War, has been all too easily forgotten but is now rightfully remembered within the recent international celebration of her continuance as Head of State for longer than any other occupant of St Edward's Chair.
, , Significant influences in her childhood would come from her mother, Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, and prior to her death in 1953, her grandmother Queen Mary of Teck. It would be the latter who would accompany the 11-year old Princess and her sister Princess Margaret to a 'tour of the Bank of England building that lasted three quarters of an hour' in November 1937. The impromptu visit was marked by the presentation of this set of coins, appropriately reflecting the recent coronation of His Majesty King George VI, and her beloved father.
, , Whilst social historians wmay bemoan the lack of fingerprints across their brilliant surfaces, the exquisite toning and faint superficial marks that once provided such enjoyment to a careful young Princess can now be appreciated and bewonndered by numismatists around the world at this unique public auction, one of very few numismatic items ever to enter the private domain from her immediate sphere and in the view of Messrs. Spink & Son a fitting celebration of Her Majesty the Queen's remarkable personal and indeed public achievement at the occasion of her Platinum Jubilee. An enduring icon for generations around the world, and an inspiration to those of all faiths or none, Her Majesty's reign is both a hallmark of her unique character, as much as it has been an effortless demonstration of her calm and reassuring leadership, not just as Head of the Commonwealth but also as mother of her Royal family. As Stephen Fry said perfectly, "how lucky, lucky, lucky we are to have the Queen as our representative, hooray, hark the new Elizabethan Age!"
, , Please note this lot will be sold with a hand written note in Her Majesty's own hand in pencil and a facsimile of the cheque presented to Her Majesty, Queen Mary from Spink on Thursday 7 October 1948, during a week of Royal charitable endeavours to help raise funds for the Nurse's Pensions Fund.
Estimate: £15,000.00 - £20,000.00
