Charles II (1660-1685), 'Elephant' Crown, 1666 XVIII, second laureate and draped bust right, elephant below, rev. reads RE•X in error, crowned shields cruciform, six strings to harp, lettered edge upwards, 29.42g, 6h (Bull 369 [R2]; ESC 34; Spink 3356), scratches and pecking on obverse, especially before face and above bust, lightly cleaned, the variety otherwise clear, strictly fair / almost fine and thus about average for this popular type, a noted rarity in the Crown series.
