Timor - Pataca 1890 (1900), Silver Maltese cross stamped above the Liberty Cap.Gom. 01.02; KM. 8.1.During the late 19th century the local government tried to put a halt to the large number of counterfeit Mexican 8 Reales that were imported into the country. As a result all genuine pieces were counterstamped with a Maltese cross by decree of the 13th of June 1900. Interestingly enough only Mexican Liberty Cap 8 Reales were subjected to this treatment, and no other types of host coin are known to bear this counterstamp.Struck on a Mexico 8 Reales 1890 AE of the Oaxaca mint. 26.89 g.
