Israel - The Twin Towers 2001 - Silver 925, 62g, 50mm

Official Israel Memorial Medal, 2001/5761

This medal is a poignant expression of the solidarity between the citizens of Israel and New York, the United States and the whole of the free world, following the horrific acts of terror of September 11, 2001, when the Twin Towers collapsed, burying beneath them 2,977 people. In addition to serving as a memorial of the fallen, this medal expresses our conviction for freedom and democracy, as well as the strong bond between the United States and Israel. The medal face depicts the buildings on the skyline of New York. The buildings are shown with raised relief while the destroyed Twin Towers are carved inwards. The date of the tragedy 9.11.01 is also engraved and the "11" is emphasized in such a way that it is also a reminder of the Twin Towers. "United in Democracy" is the inscription on the medal, the U and D being intertwined to symbolize the common values of the United States and Israel, such as democracy, freedom and equality. In the border, 18 (numerical value of the Hebrew word "Chai" – life) flowers symbolize renewal and the victory of life.

Obverse: The skyscrapers in Manhattan in relief, with the missing Twin Towers incised, symbolizing their absence. Above the skyline, the date, 9.11.01 with the "11" appearing as the Twin Towers, the inscription "United in Democracy" with the "U" and the "D" intertwined. In the upper right-hand border, the inscription "Forever Remembered", in the lower left-hand border, a row of flowers.

Reverse: The skyscrapers in Manhattan in relief, with the missing Twin Towers incised, symbolizing their absence.
