Anne (1702-1714), Post-Union, 'Roses and Plumes' Shilling, 1714 over 3, fourth draped bust left, rev. four crowned shields cruciform, roses and plumes in angles, six strings to harp, obliquely milled edge, 5.80g, 6h (cf. Pywell-Phillips 249; Bull 1413 [R3]; cf. ESC 1161; Spink 3617), a lovely coin with a rich dark tone, a pleasingly good very fine, rare, the overdate clear and unlisted in the Classic ESC.
Bull regards the overdate as much rarer than the regular 1714, listing 1714 as rarity N,and 1714 over 3 as R3. The Standard Catalogue lists the overdate, but recently the price difference between the two has narrowed. The overdate is difficult to spot, and it is possible that over the years many coins listed as 1714 were in fact 1714 over 3.
Estimate: £300 - £360
