PHOENICIA. Tyre. 126/5 B.C. - A.D. 65/6. AR shekel. 14.25 gm. 27 mm. Dated CY 2 (125/4 B.C.). Laureate bust of Melkart right, lion skin around neck / Eagle standing left on prow; palm frond behind; LB (date) above club to left; M to right, Phoenician B between legs. HGC 10, 357. DCA 919. DCA Tyre 5. Good Very Fine; lustrous old collection toning; good metal; obverse slightly off center but good style and well struck on a large flan. Attractive early issue.

Shekels of Tyre were accepted as payment for the temple tax at Jerusalem, and are generally thought to have made up the "thirty pieces of silver" that Judas received for betraying Jesus.
